Isle of Capri (yesterday)

Touring the Isle of Capri provided yet another wonder of nature that cannot be captured save first hand experience. The boat ride from Sorrento to the isle was gorgeous! The waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea through the Gulf of Naples are a deep, nearly black shade of blue and are the only way other than by helicopter to reach this fabulous place.







Once we were dropped off for several hours to explore Capri, my lovely bride was overjoyed to find a major theme of this home to only those of exorbitant wealth is lemons. Lemons everywhere and that is not a complaint but a celebration 🤣



The next time you hug my sweet, Eden you may catch the faint aroma as these citrus smile creators as we did not stop short of acquiring AnnaCapri Lemon perfume. 🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋

Pompeii

We LOVED our tour of Pompeii today! Two hours didn’t feel like enough time to fully explore all of it. Pompeii was a thriving metropolis of 170 acres with running water throughout the city and hundreds of shops and homes. It was buried by boulders and mud after the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 72 AD.  The preservation of the area is amazing with bricks, stones and painted walls still intact throughout. Pompeii was originally located along a river, but the explosion in 72 AD completely changed the landscape. The picture below is the entry to the city which was originally a port that went straight to the sea. The walls are painted with pictures of what the rooms were used for. This is a painting on the wall of the public baths with “advertising” for the services offered along the top row (zoom in 😉) The stone and brick is original throughout the area. Colosseum and Ancient Rome

We visited the Colosseum today with a tour of the underground where the gladiators waited to fight. The picture above is the hallway leading to the staircase that brought them into the arena. The underground is a series of tunnels and rooms where prisoners (involuntary gladiators), animals and hundreds of people worked to create the “shows” for the Roman elite. The arched areas below were animal cages. This is an elevator that has been reconstructed. It was used to move “sets” between shows. This corridor runs the length of the Colosseum underground and was used to move people and animals between shows. This is the staircase leading to the entrance to the arena of the Colosseum. It is dark and small. The opening to the arena is a suddenly bright, glaring experience.  A view of the arena. The underground was covered with wood flooring that was covered in sand.
